Description:  Learn two new tangle patterns. This is a great class if you are new to the surface burning technique which requires a writing tip for your wood burning pen. We will begin on paper, where I show you how to draw and shadow the tangles. Then we will transfer the pattern to the gourd and learn how to use the pen tip to draw and shadow your design. Depending on your speed, you should complete more than half of the gourd in the time allowed.

Teacher Provides:  The gourd ready to wood burn. Handouts will be provided.

Students Bring:  Wood burning supplies, a writing tip (see picture), sketch paper/pencil, narrow masking tape.

Students will not complete the project in class.

Mimbre Pottery

Description: You will learn a brief history of Mimbre pottery as well as how to make your own. You will follow the process to make an ancient relic. A finished gourd depends on the detail of design. All gourds will be different due to your creative flow.

Teacher provides: White wash, patterns, water bowls, paper towels, hair dryers and handouts.

Students provide: Gourd bowl, cleaned with inside finished (approx 5.5-6” in dimeter and 4.5-5” tall) , brushes (thin liner, ¼” and 1”), small titanium white paint – either Golden or Liquetex (use the Michaels or Hobby Lobby coupon), pencil/eraser, black paint, flexible ruler and rubber templates (round, square, etc,), finishing spray, wood burner with a skew tip (google skew tip if you are unsure what it is).

Students will not complete the project in class.

Description: This is a fun class! This is a mixed media class and students will work with different elements to create this beautiful box. They will learn tips about having a good fitting lid, also will work with mixed media to add the texture, and a fun painting technique to create a faux raku finish adding the sparkle, color and interest to this beautiful box. Last but not least will set the metal torched leaf for the handle of the lid to complement and give to the piece an elegant finish.

Teacher provides: A step by step written tutorial, a clean and ready to go gourd, matte and metallic paints, mixed media, and torched metal leaf.

Students provide: Heat gun or hair dryer, small and medium paint brushes, sanding sponges, Gorilla super glue, power strip, paint palette or paper plate and small container to use it as brush washer.

Description: Create a spectacular Native American Gourd Maiden with beautiful embellishments. Learn how to add yarn for hair.  Each maiden will look different due to the shape and curvature of the gourd. Mounted on a one-of-a-kind petrified wood base.

Teacher provides: beads, blanket, earrings, rivets, yarn, tin cons, porcupine quills, ostrich shell piece, raffia, leather strip and the petrified wood base. Plus tutorial.

Students provide: Banana gourd cut and cleaned. Size of banana gourd 8-9” height. And a small gourd for the head. Cut bottom off the banana gourd and sand level. Cut the top of the banana gourd off, just enough so the head can fit in. Awl, tweezers, Glue E6000 & bring your carver in case we need to round the neck area.

Students will complete the project.

Description: Join relief carver Sue Haberer for a 1-day basic carving class. If this is your fist time to carve or just want to hone your carving skills then this is the class for you. Various carving techniques will be taught and tips will be given to help you make a professional looking gourd.  Information will be given on carving safety, tool usage and care.  Since this is a “techniques” class you will work at your own speed and may or may not complete your gourd during class hours. If time permits, you may decorate your gourd using special pens provided by the teacher, using her Zuni Zen Gourd as an example.

Teacher provides: A few Fila-point burrs for sale, detailed handout, special pens and finishing spray.  

Students provide: Carver (no battery operated tool), cutting wheel, inverted cone, various size ball burrs, fila-point burr (I have a few to sell), sanding paper and drums, small files, mini saw, Xacto knife with sharp blades, dust mask, eye protection, gourd at least ¼” thick and no larger than 6” tall by 7” diameter (cut open and cleaned inside do not paint inside), power strip and extension cord. Tools will be available for sale at the festival.

Students will not complete the project.

This is a beginning level class but any level can do this.

Description: Using a tall body gourd, students will learn step by step how to create this beautiful pearlized Nautilus shell.  They will be using stick and burn pattern to accelerate the process of the design and will execute an advanced detail filigree carving technique, creating a lace-like delicate and airy decorative composition.  Do to the different skill levels will focus on finishing the shell in class and the painting of the back of the gourd will be done at home. They will also work on stippling, glazing and the use of acrylic paints with translucent metallic powders to give the shell its beautiful pearlized iridescent white/ pink tone.  Finishing up, they will learn to inlay copper wire to accentuate the curvature of the shell, giving this wonderful piece of art work a rich and elegant finish.

Teacher provides: A step by step written tutorial, stick and burn pattern to accelerate the process, copper wire, matte and metallic paints, acrylic paints, iridescent metallic powders, glazes, water base and spray sealer.

Instructor will have available a couple of electric sanders to share while in class, also will have burrs and sanding tools for sale on site.

Students provide: A clean inside and out tall body gourd (size: not shorter than 10 inches high and width: 6 inches and up across), a good quality dust mask, wood burner with your favorite tip, eye protection, Dremel or similar rotary tool (no cordless please), all the burrs you already own. Small electrical disk sander with medium and fine grit sand paper, your favorite inks or dyes, gorilla super glue, pencil, one pair of gloves, sanding paper or sanding sponges, riffler files, small and medium size flat paint brushes, small nose pliers, wire cutters, heat gun or small hair dryer, power strip and your general gourding tool box which will be helpful.

Coiling & Powdered Pigments on Gourds

Description: Have you ever wanted to experiment with those multi-colored powders before        you purchased? Well here’s your chance! Come play in this fun class to see how many of the ways to mix and match and create a custom look. When you are happy with your custom creation, the gourd’s surface will be sealed. Students will continue by learning the coiling technique with variegated ribbons.

Teacher provides: Pattern, pigments, sealer, gloves, coiling materials and embellishments. A few Dremels to share for those who need them, 3/16 bits.

Students provide: 6-8” diameter gourd x 6” tall, clean, cut with wavey around the top. (refer to the picture) Bring Dremel for drilling holes around the top edge, or you can pre drill with 3/16 bit ¼” from top and ¼” apart.  Paint inside and out with flat black paint.

Students will complete the project.

Baby Bird in Nest – Foam Carving

Description: Get a taste of carving soft high density, poly urethane foam.  The student will carve the head and upper parts of the body of a baby bird and caterpillar using the techniques of carving soft foam.  The carvings will then be colored and finished with varnish.  The carvings, nest materials and gourd will then be assembled resulting in a completed project of a bird with a caterpillar in its beak sitting in its nest inside a gourd.  After completing the gourd project, time permitting, the class will also learn how to carve animals and birds for placement on / in future gourd projects.

Gourds will already be dyed and holes drilled so student can have time to finish weaving in class and go home with a finished gourd.

Description: In this class, the student will use a method of carving developed by professional clowns for decades to build their clown props - carving soft, high density, polyurethane foam.  This is truly a dying art form Mary Beth Martin was taught by Marc Anthony, top Prop Master for Ringling Brothers Circus.  The students will learn to carve butterflies and insects out of the soft foam - a perfect material to learn to carve.  The only tool required is scissors to cut the foam.  The foam makes it easy for the student to see what to cut next.  Students will learn to carve butterflies and insects and also learn different methods to finish the carvings before mounting on a gourd. Although this is a techniques class, time permitting, the student can glue the finished butterflies and insects onto a stained gourd for the finished piece of art work. 

Teacher provides: Foam, paint, gesso, heat guns, brushes, varnish, freezer paper, electric carving knife, pastels modeling paste, patterns, and paper towels.

Students provide: Sharp small pointed scissors, a stained and varnished gourd (optional). Gourd may not be used in class if students has not finished their butterflies and insects.

Decaying Wood

Description: In this class you will learn how to turn your gourd into a decaying piece of wood. We are not trying to finish an entire gourd but just learn the carving technique. Therefore, we will be working on only one area of your gourd. This process has many steps. Each step is simple but time consuming. This class will take approximately 4-6 hours (with a lunch break) depending on your speed and experience. It’s really fun to watch your gourd rot away! When you finish your decayed area I will have stains available so you can apply the finishing touch which turns it to a wood-like finish.

Teacher provides: Stain, rubber gloves and a tutorial.

Students provide: Any gourd (any size or condition and need to be a minimum of ¼” thick and cut, cleaned and sprayed black inside and sealed with wood hardener), baby wipes, carving tools & bits, apron and dust mask. A list of bits will be emailed to each student. Some examples are: skin removal, round ball cutting burs, small cutting wheels, filigree burs, etc.

Students will not complete the project.

Any level can do this with some knowledge of their carver & burrs.

Description: Using a tall body gourd, students will create this beautiful piece, using vibrant colors and exciting details.  The background is a lace- like filigree carving technique, very airy to add a delicate touch to the composition, the dancing ginkgo leaves are glazed using metallic and ink dyes giving it an effervescent look.  Students will create the opening of this beautiful piece by cutting off the gourd’s crown leaving certain elements of your design exposed and floating.  Finishing up, they will learn to inlay copper wire to accentuate the curvature of the leaves and will inlay a turquoise bead at the end of each leaf, giving this wonderful piece of art work a touch of elegance.

Teacher provides: A step by step written tutorial, stick and burn pattern to accelerate the process, copper wire, matte and metallic paints, acrylic paints, turquoise beads, glazes, water base and spray sealer.

Students will learn how to drill holes to coil weave cording wrapped in luscious fibers to cover the purse top. Various embellishments will be available to accent the bottom portion of the purse. Students will learn to attach a back clasp, strap and front latch.

Carving Butterflies & Insects/Learning 3D Carving

Description: Student will use a method of carving developed by professional clowns for decades to build their clown props - carving soft, high density, polyurethane foam.  This is truly a dying art form Mary Beth Martin was taught by Marc Anthony, top Prop Master for Ringling Brothers Circus.  The students will learn to carve butterflies and insects out of the soft foam - a perfect material to learn to carve.  The only tool required is scissors to cut the foam.  The foam makes it easy for the student to see what to cut next.  Students will learn to carve butterflies and insects and also learn different methods to finish the carvings before mounting on a gourd. Although this is a techniques class, time permitting, the student can glue the finished butterflies and insects onto a stained gourd for the finished piece of art work. 

Teacher provides: Foam, paint, gesso, heat guns, brushes, varnish, freezer paper, electric carving knife, pastels modeling paste, patterns, and paper towels.

Students provide: Sharp small pointed scissors, stained and varnished gourd (optional). Gourd may not be used in class if students has not finished their butterflies and insects.

Students will not complete the project in class.

Wood Burn / Transparent Acrylic Lizard

Description: Learn how to create a rock shape look on the top of the gourd and learn to lightly wood burn a lizard and enhance the design with transparent acrylic.

Teacher provides: Pattern, Transparent Acrylic (colors, rich brown, Leaf; which is green, white and black; and Formula 49, micro brushes, piece of glass to place for the paint pallet, fake cactus and tutorial.

Students provide: A clean cut gourd 7” - 9”height, carving tool and bits, sand paper, Transparent Acrylic (colors, rich brown, leaf; which is green, black and white) Formula 49, (If you do not have them you can purchase them at Welburn’s online, teacher will have them for students who do not; heat gun, temperature controlled wood burner with a small rounded skew. Students to bring a mini hand saw if they have one, I will be bringing mine also to share.

Description: Tired of fairy houses? Well, then! Let’s do Monster Houses! This fun class will give you experience in carving, ink dying, sculpting with polymer clay and assemblage and you get to go home with a finished product. You will carve and stipple the openings for the eyes and hands and make them look as if the monster is coming out of a broken rock or rotten piece of wood. Once the gourd is carved you will stain the outside of the gourd. Polymer hands and eyeballs will be demonstrated only and will be furnished for your project. This is a fun project just in time for Halloween!

Teacher provides: Apoxie Sculpt, wood stain, ink dyes, spray sealer sculpted eyeballs, hands, grasses and mosses, sticks, cotton batting, etc.

Students provide: Any size and shape gourd (cut, cleaned and sprayed black inside and blemishes are encouraged), small electric saw (Micro Mark), carving tools with large, medium, small and tiny ball cutting burrs, apron dust mask, protective eye wear, baby wipes, pencils and E6000 glue.

The Narwel Gourd

Description: This is a new tangle pattern to wood burn on a gourd using my surface burning technique, The “narwels” can be filled with any tangle you like which makes each one of these gourds different. I will show you how to keep the viewer interested as they turn the gourd to follow the narwels. If you are new to the surface burning technique, beware that your progress may be slower, but it is easy to learn.  Most will finish half of the gourd before leaving and will feel confident they can finish it on their own.

Teacher provides: I will bring the metallic medium I used. And provide ideas for great tangles.

Students provide: A tall, rather than short gourd. The narwels will come up from the bottom and crawl up the sides. Make sure you sand the gourd till shiny. Bring along an ink dye color for the background, a wood burner and a writing tip for your pen.

Students will not complete the project in class.

Copper Rosette

Description: Using a bottle or tall body gourd, students will learn step by step how to create this beautiful Vessel.  They will use stick and burn to accelerate the process of the design and execute a three-dimensional carving technique creating a delicate and elegant rosette.  They will work on beveling the contour of each petal of the rosette giving it depth and dimension.  They will also work on stippling; will use patinas and Gourd Master acrylic paints with translucent metallic powders to give the vessel an ancient and metallic look.  Finishing up, they will learn to inlay copper wire to accentuate the curvature and detail of the rosette.

Due to the different skill levels, some will finish the whole gourd in class and some will get close to finish, but everybody will be able to finish the rosette carving, painting, and some of the copper wire inlay in class. They will be provided with instructions to be able to finish at home.

Teacher provides: A step by step written tutorial, stick and burn pattern to accelerate the process, copper wire, matte and metallic paints, acrylic paints, copper patinas, glazes, and spray sealer.

Students provide: A clean inside and out tall body gourd (size: not shorter than 10 inches high and width: not smaller than 6 inches across). Dust musk or respirator, Dremel or similar rotary tool (no battery operated please), all the burrs you already own (if you need a comprehensive list please contact the instructor), heat gun, wood burner with your favorite tip, small paint brushes, sanding sponges and riffler files, Gorilla super glue, needle nose pliers and wire cutters. Your favorite ink dyes or transparent acrylics, power strip and your general gourding tool box which will be helpful.

Students will not complete the project in class.

Description: Have you ever wanted to experiment with those multi-colored powders before        you purchased? Well here’s your chance! Come play in this fun class to see how many of the ways to mix and match and create a custom look. When you are happy with your custom creation, the gourd’s surface will be sealed. Students will continue by learning the coiling technique with variegated ribbons.

Teacher provides: Pattern, pigments, sealer, gloves, coiling materials and embellishments. A few Dremels to share for those who need them, 3/16 bits.

Students provide: 6-8” diameter gourd x 6” tall, clean, cut with wavey around the top. (refer to the picture) Bring Dremel for drilling holes around the top edge, or you can pre drill with 3/16 bit ¼” from top and ¼” apart.  Paint inside and out with flat black paint.

Wood Burned Leather Look

Description: Using a wood burner that has temperature control (such as Razortip, Everglades, Burnmaster, etc) flowers and leaves will be burned to resemble tooled leather. After the wood burning, the background around the leaves and flowers will be carved. If you prefer, the background can be dyed instead of carving. The outer oval around flower area has copper foil and students will be given the foil to glue on gourd at home but instructor will demonstrate how to use foil.

Teacher provides: Instructor will provide gourd, instructions, pattern (already traced on gourd), Memories inks to use to dye gourd, copper or gold foil to put on oval around leaves. I will have carving burs for sale for anyone who does not have some to carve area around flowers and leaves.

Students provide:   Students will need carver and small round bits if you want to carve background area around leaves and flowers ( I will have bits for sale), wood burner that has temperature control (such as Razortip, Everglades, Burnmaster, etc)  wood burning pen to shade with- I used a writing tip pen for this piece but a small round ball tip or bent spear tip will work.

Baby Bird in Nest – Foam Carving

Description: Get a taste of carving soft high density, poly urethane foam.  The student will carve the head and upper parts of the body of a baby bird and caterpillar using the techniques of carving soft foam.  The carvings will then be colored and finished with varnish.  The carvings, nest materials and gourd will then be assembled resulting in a completed project of a bird with a caterpillar in its beak sitting in its nest inside a gourd.  After completing the gourd project, time permitting, the class will also learn how to carve animals and birds for placement on / in future gourd projects.

Description: Students will learn to wood burn seahorses and a seashell. Then learn how to carve background around seahorses. You will not have time to finish all the carving in class but carve enough to learn the technique. I will demo how to paint and high lite the carved background.  And the next step we will do in class is use Brusho Watercolors to paint the rest of the gourd. If you have never used Brusho crystals, this will be an excellent way to try them. I will demo how to use gold foil. You will need to spray seal finished gourd when you get home.

Teacher provides: gourd, Brusho crystals, plastic gloves, gold foil.

Students provide: Wood burner, skew wood burning pen, a writing tip or small ball tip or other wood burning pen to shade with. A carver and bit to remove outer shell of gourd and small round bit to carve texture (I use double cut bits and will have them for sale – if you have never used double cut bits, you will be amazed how good they cut). The Holtons will have wood burners, wood burning pens and carvers and for sale at the Festival.                      .

Faux Cabochon and Basketry Techniques

Description: Come join Rosario Wilke artist/instructor in this fun class full of technique. In this class, you will learn the process of carving a faux basket weave technique with just a few simple steps.  You will wood burn and glaze over the design to enhance the carved details of the reed giving depth to the basket weave. Also, you will carve a detailed faux copper cabochon, will inlay a turquoise bead and copper wire to add a touch of a southwest feel and elegance to the cabochon. Students will complete the carving and painting of the design, but won't finish painting the body of the gourd. 

Teacher provides: A step by step written tutorial, stick n’ burn pattern to accelerate the process, acrylic paints and glazes, copper wire, turquoise beads.

Students provide: A clean inside and outside gourd round like or any shape you might like, considering the pattern is 5 inches across.  Wood burner with your favorite tip, a good quality dust mask, eye protection, Dremel or similar rotary tool (no cordless please), all the burrs you already own. Small electrical sander with medium and fine grit sand paper if you do not have one, instructor will have one sanding station for sharing while in class. Sanding paper or sanding sponges, diamond riffler files, pencil, small and medium paint brushes, gorilla super glue, small nose pliers, wire cutters, power strip and your general gourding tool box which will be helpful.  

Students will not complete the project in class.
