ABOUT THE ARTIST
Hellen is a born Texan
and has lived in Texas off and on most of her life. It was after
she got married that she lived in many places within the US and Holland.
During this time, she was your typical artisan mom with three children who
spent most of her life taking care of her family, working in the corporate
world, and finding time to do her "hobby" whenever she could.
After working for 32 years and having no more children at home, she
finally decided to pursue her dream and left the corporate world and started
her own business, Paintings by Hellen. She attends fine art/craft
shows in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and will add Arizona in 2006.
Her work can also be found in upscale stores, galleries, and viewed/purchased
by visiting her web site.
She teaches classes and private students when she can squeeze them
into her hectic schedule. At the urging of customers, Hellen wrote
a beginner’s pine needle coiling book showing how to have stitches straight
on both sides of a piece.
Her style of work includes SW/Native American themes, collectible
Santas, Navajo and pine needle coiling, pyrographing, and painting.
She is basically a self-taught artisan who learned from reading and practicing
a great deal which has developed into her own style of painting. Since
being part Comanche, her love for SW/Native American is in her blood.
Hellen found gourds about three years ago and fell in love with their
versatility which forced her to expand her abilities. She has won
several awards, had her work in magazines and a book, and been recognized
for as being a highly versatile artisan. She considers herself blessed.
