I became interested in gourd art after
I retired from twenty-seven years of teaching. One of my friends
showed me a gourd she had painted and I was hooked from that
moment. When
we lived in Earth, we raised gourds. I had to forgo growing
gourds
when we moved to Levelland due to a lack of space; I really miss that
part
of the gourd pleasures.
I have a business called Earthly
Creations, named after the town of Earth plus the fact that gourds are
created in the earth ... thus Earthly Creations.
After retirement, I could not and
would
not sit still so I became involved with the Texas Gourd Society.
The
past five years have been a blur of involvement, all the way from being
on
the Board of Directors, web site administrator, TGS Vice President, TGS
President, TGS show chair, to being the leader of the West Texas Gourd
Patch.
I have tried many techniques in gourd
art but my favorites are cutting out my design with a mini-saw and
power carving.
I find myself working with gourds 8 hours a day, every day and would
even work into the night if it were not for the necessity of sleeping,
eating
and menial housework.
